Red, blue and yellow are the primary colors, from which other colors may be mixed. Teach through experimentation and/or illustration that the secondary colors are made from the primary colors: orange, green and purple.
A child's box of paints and six small jars are required for the following demonstration. Pour a little water into each jar and mix a little red paint in one, a little blue in the next, and a little yellow in a third. These are the primary colors. Let us see what can be mixed by adding two of the colors together. Take an empty jar. Pour in a little blue water and a little yellow. Mix together and the child will see that green is made. Now take another jar and mix blue with red to make purple. Last, demonstrate how orange is made by pouring red and yellow together in a sixth jar.
